Dec. 6 Santa Lucia Celebration
By Kim Anderson kanderson@kingsburgrecorder.com
Kingsburg will light up the night Dec. 6 at its annual Santa Lucia Celebration.
Young women will be in white gowns with red sashes and crowns of candles for this Swedish celebration. As the story goes, Santa Lucia is the light queen and lights up northern Europe at this time of the year when daylight is rare. Kingsburg's version of this will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Draper Street on the first Saturday in December. Swedish pancakes will be served in the morning with different activities going on throughout the day.
The Lions Club serves the pancakes with the help of other organizations, including the Kingsburg Cancer Volunteers.
"We have two lines going and we help make pancake batter," said Lousie Andersen, member of Kingsburg Cancer Volunteers. "The last couple of years, I've worked on taking money and we've been busy from 6:30 until 10:30 a.m."
There were about 1,400 breakfasts served last year, she said.
Arts and crafts exhibits will be displayed on the sidewalk during the celebration, a chicken luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a parade will take place.
There will be a gingerbread house contest as well and entry forms are available through the Chamber of Commerce.
Applications for the arts and crafts exhibit are also available.
There will also be a blood drive in memory of Jason Hurtado at the First Baptist Church in the youth room from 2 to 7 p.m.
"I wanted it to be somewhere where there are a lot of people, a big event," said Austin Garcia, a friend of Hurtado and coordinator of the blood drive. "This is a good opportunity to get a lot of people involved. There will be a display set up with pictures of Jason and a video."
Garcia said keeping Hurtado's memory alive is important to him as is saving lives.
"One person," he said. "One person can save three lives."
Also at the celebration will be the reading of the Lucia story and singing of the Lucia song in Swedish followed by he Festival of Lights Parade. Christmas lights will be part of every entry in the parade.
"This is a great opportunity for people throughout the state and Valley to get into the holiday spirit," said Jess Chambers, Chamber of Commerce director. "What better place than in our quaint little village here."
