Queen, fireworks and Disney at Kingsburg homecoming

In a Friday night filled with animated magic, Kingsburg High School celebrated homecoming with Woody, Simba, Captain Hook, the Mad Hatter and a win in a game against Central Valley Christian. The homecoming theme was Disney movies with every class sporting a different idea. Kingsburg High also announced the homecoming queen, Brooke Stockton. Stockton was chosen from a field of five queen candidates. The queen is decided by a school-wide vote, participation in the week's activities and an interview. Students voted late last week, according to school officials.

With the new stadium and its all-weather track, the homecoming festivities could not be as elaborate with big floats as in previous years. The students had to do "people floats," where they had a parade with a backdrop.

Students dressed up like characters from the movies for their particular class -- "Toy Story," freshman; "The Lion King," sophomores; "Peter Pan," juniors; and "Alice in Wonderland," seniors.

The seniors won homecoming for best presentation, with the juniors coming in second, sophomores third and freshman last.

Each of the classes also performed short skits based off the movies. School officials then judged the performances from the press box. All of the classes performed choreographed skits to various hip-hop tunes after a more traditional Disney-heavy entrance.
Kingsburg High also had themed days leading up to Friday's game.

Monday was hip-hop day with a dance-off at break. Tuesday's theme was hillbilly day. Students had to catch a greased pig at break on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it was camouflage day with a tug of war at break. On Thursday, it was pie the queen at break during pajama day. Friday, as usual, was spirit day.

On Friday, flocks of green and gold clad students gathered around in a circle to watch queen candidates and football players wildly pull each other around a trash can with yellow ropes. The goal of the game was to force the other contestants to strike the trash can as they pulled and flailed at their opponents.

Later that night, the queen contestants rode in on golf carts to the applause of thousands of fans. Fireworks once again shattered the night after a rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner."

The event's freshman representative was Allison Gardner, the sophomore attendant was Jessica Pastor and the junior representative was Carolyn Garcia. The queen candidates were Stockton, Thalia Garcia, Estefania Santana, Elisa Weathers and Alexandra Zanovitch.

Stockton, who was the freshmen class representative three years ago, glowed during the moment when she was named queen.

"It's exciting to hear your name called," Stockton said.

Fortunately for Stockton, the homecoming queen accolades do not end yet.

"I get to come back next year and crown the new queen," Stockton said. "I'm looking forward to that."

There was no homecoming king picked for Kingsburg High, at least not yet. The homecoming king is chosen during winter homecoming.
