Business/Tween store opens in Kingsburg for 5 to teens

Stylish bracelets, hats and girl's clothing line the walls of a small clothing shop on Sierra Street. This isn't just any clothing store, though. This is The Sassy Tween, a new store for girls ages 5 to teen.

"I felt like this was a niche that needed to be filled," owner Nichole Jensen said. "There is no other place in Kingsburg to buy girls clothes so this helps put convenience in busy moms' lives."

Jensen said opening this store gives tweens in Kingsburg a place to shop for clothes and accessories made just for them -- and helps out moms who don't have time to travel to other cities like Fresno looking for these items.

"I would use the convenience of a store like this myself so I know other moms could appreciate it," she said. "Their lives are busy enough to begin with and they have to schedule times to go shop."

Jensen has a 9-year-old daughter so she is familiar with the demand of today's youth.
"I didn't require much at that age," she said. "I only have one daughter. It's different when you are a mom of three or four."

Jensen said she plans to go to the Los Angeles fashion district twice a month to purchase items to sell in her store.

"I have one or two of each item so my inventory is relatively small," she said. "And I want to keep my prices reasonable."

Jensen grew up in Kingsburg and said she feels that a store like this will be good for moms and teens alike. Right now, she carries girl's clothes but has already received requests to carry other items. The store had its grand opening Oct. 4 and was a success, Jensen said.

"Everyone had positive things to say, they liked what they saw," she said. " Right now I have shoes, hats, belts and clothes but I already got a request to carry baby clothes."

Kingsburg isn't the only place, however, opening up stores just for tweens. All over the country, advertisers are targeting young people in the tween category as the primary market for generating revenue. The exact age range of the tween category is all based upon opinion, but most Web sites agree that a tween is about 8 to 14 years of age. According to Dictionary.com, a tween is considered too old to be a child and too young to be a teenager. This is the primary age range for advertisers to target because it's the time when children are old enough to make decisions yet still rely on their parents for financial support.

And young idols, such as Hannah Montana, encourage new fashion trends and accessories, Jensen said.

Information from Tween Brands Inc. indicated that net sales for Tween merchandise in the first quarter of 2008 reached $251.7 million, a 13 percent increase from the $223.2 million in sales for the 2007 quarter. Tween Brands is a company designed to be a one-of-a-kind brand for the tween girl. Its two stores include Limited Too and Justice.

Because Jensen still has a full time job, store operation hours are 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Visitors are encouraged to stop in and look around whether it be shopping for clothes and accessories or gift shopping.

The new store in Kingsburg, located at 1340 Sierra St., is the perfect way to bring convenience and revenue to the city.

"It will help to have a place in Kingsburg to go and pick something up," Jensen said. "I hope this brings convenience to other moms who work full time."
