Kingsburg High students ready for '08 Prom

It may still be a few days away, but students at Kingsburg High are gearing up to wear their snappiest suits and finest dresses this Friday at Wolf Lakes Park near Clovis for their 2008 junior/senior prom.

"I'm going because it's my last year and it's a school event with your classmates," said senior Lisvet Portugal. "(It's) good to hang out with people in your class and it's a chance for good memories."

Although school officials aren't sure how many years Kingsburg High's annual junior/senior prom has been in existence, they're confident that the junior class -- who's in charge of planning the prom with some help from seniors -- will put on a dance that's as good as ever.

"One of the best places where we've had prom's is at Wolf Lake ... it's just such a beautiful setting, it's perfect. I think it'll be wonderful," said Linda Clark, superintendent for the Kingsburg Joint Union High School District.

Her colleague, Assistant Principal Doug Davis, agrees.
"It's just got a really unique feel to it," he said.

As with previous years, there'll be food for students to eat and a DJ providing music. Davis also said this year's prom theme is "Shanghai Nights" and will include Asian-themed food and hors d'oeuvre.

Last year, Kingsburg High's prom was held at TorNino's, a banquet hall located in Fresno. This year it's being held at Wolf Lakes Park because the school alternates where they hold prom each year, Clark said.

Whatever the case, Portugal and other students at Kingsburg High are excited for the upcoming festivities.

Portugal herself said she's looking forward to "feeling pretty for the night" and she's interested to see how this year's theme compares with others.

"It's just something different, it's something we haven't done before ... which is good," she said.

Accompanying Portugal at the dance will be her date, senior Anthony Ayala, who said he's going because it's his last year in school.

"The way I see it, It's more like a reunion with all my friends, one last dance before school is over," he said.

He's also got another reason, too.

"Basically, to have a good time," Ayala said.

For other students, like senior Manpreet Sidhu, the reason for going is much the same.

"It's the last dance," she said. "You can't miss it."

The Kingsburg High School 2008 Junior/Senior prom is this Friday, May 9, from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Wolf Lakes Park.

" Again another community spending their money in Clovis instead of Kingsburg, bet you went to Fresno for your formal wear too. Nothing like remembering who donated to your causes for four years back in your own community. "
